My dog died.
I could tell that incredibly tear-jerking story,
chocked full of adjectives, describing the moment we first met in 1990, the day
that she died in 2007.
Are you doing the math? She was old, wasn’t she? Which means
she grew old with me and I grew up with her.
I could tell you how she was the absolute love of my life,
my reason for being, my confidant and my best friend.
Yes, it’s an incredibly tear-jerking story.
But, I’m not going to tell that story.
Instead, I’m going to tell the story of the day that sweet,
precious, darling little Lhasa Apso named Peaches was contacted by aliens.
It was late when I returned home that night. I opened the
front door, and the dim light from the television was casting shadows on the
wall.
I always left The Weather Channel on for Peaches. She loved
TWC music, especially the instrumental version of Pink Floyd’s “Shine on You
Crazy Diamond." When I opened the door
that night, some jazz melody was playing as the radar map showed a line of
green thunderstorms heading our way.
Peaches didn’t meet me at the door, as she had for the last
decade. She was getting older, so I was immediately worried.
I began calling her name when my foot stepped on a hard
pile. I bent over and examined the mound. Rocks? Pebbles? Cap’n Crunch?
No, it was a pile of dog food. It was a perfectly stacked
pile of dog food, like a little mountain.
I looked around the living room. There was another little
pile. And another. Identical little heaps of food trailed down the hallway, all
equally spread 2 or 3 feet apart.
The path of piles led me to the bedroom, where Peaches was
hiding beneath the bed. She was scared, shaking. I’d never seen her so nervous,
with the exception of Fourth of July when fireworks sent her into a tizzy which
called for a dog Valium concealed in a hot dog.
I repeatedly asked her what was wrong, fearing something
terrible had happened to her. I feared she had been probed with more than the
questions that I was now asking.
What other explanation could there be? Aliens had visited my Lhasa Apso.
The small piles of dog food? Evidently they were a sign, the
dog version of crop circles.
Peaches never revealed what had happened, although she spent
the night barking for no obvious reason. We crawled into the bed, the rain poured, and I held her
close.
And we both slept with one eye open.

Yup that would creep me out! I sincerely hope it wasn't Aliens - those guys are such bastards. I'm sorry about the loss of your dog, she seems like she was quite the character!
ReplyDeleteThat dog was awesomemess in a furry package...er.
DeleteDAmn girl, I want to steal your awesome lines and your sense of humor and your funny as hell. I am still dying over your line about Good Will Hunting from that dry cleaners story. This is quite impressive. I love that TWC music too-- very soothing, especially during a fucking tropical rain storm.
ReplyDeleteBahaaaa! I love this comment. I'm so glad GWH stuck with you from the dry cleaner post!!
DeleteLove your opening line and the way you use a story to make us also love her instead of just trying to convince us that she was loveable. Very well done, plus I'm a sucker for a good dog story. . .
ReplyDeleteI know you love a good dog story! Thanks for the comment!
DeleteI love your dog! Well, I would have if I could meet her. I love the dog food crop circles. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteThank yoU!!
DeleteI'm totally now picturing your dog making a dog kibble version of Richard Dreyfuss's mashed potato sculpture in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
ReplyDeleteTotally.
DeleteThat is so creepy! I would've immediately suspected the house was haunted! ;)
ReplyDeleteQuite possibly.
DeleteI BELIEVE!!!
ReplyDeleteCrop circles and aliens would be my go to also. Funny, touching, enjoyable writing + a cute dog character + aliens = great story!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much :)
DeleteWhat a fun - and creepy! - spin on the typical dog story.
ReplyDeleteI love the creep factor in any story!
DeleteUm thats very crazy....and im sure a better story than the one about the dead dog!
ReplyDeleteI don't know...thats a pretty touching, yet kick ass, story.
DeleteAt least the dog (or aliens?) didn't leave piles of poop instead!
ReplyDeleteFun read!
That is very creepy. Your poor doggie. Those aliens are kind of assholes, right?
ReplyDeleteRight!!
DeleteYou mean you actually slept at all that night?! Heebie jeebies! Great descriptive story with love and humor for your pup intertwined.
ReplyDeleteI slept, barely. Thanks!
DeleteOh this was really funny! What a perplexing story...only Peaches knows :) I loved the intro and how you twisted the story into something quirky. Great stuff!
ReplyDeleteOnly Peaches knew a lot of things! Thank you!
DeleteI love what dogs do with their free time although I'm sorry yours spent her leisure with E.T. Why can't they stick to abducting our rednecks and spooking our cows? Leave the puppers alone!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss.
Stick to Kentucky! Not Lhasa Apsos!!
DeleteThanks.
Dogs are some of the most amazing creatures around - probably more complex than we give them credit for, anyway. And then there's my dog - that runs into walls and barks at shadows....but I love her anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteHaha! Thanks!
DeleteDefinitely aliens.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! I love it!
ReplyDeleteObviously aliens leaving the dog version of crop circles!
You rock. Great story!
Funny! Dogs and aliens. So many questions now answered.
ReplyDeleteI know, right??!
DeleteThat is f'ing weird. My step-dog does strange stuff frequently, but that story is just weird. And the frustrating part is never finding out what happened!
ReplyDeleteI had no clue The Weather Channel plays Floyd. I'll have to check that out.
Yes, they do. Check it.
Deleteummmmm WTF?!??? :) poor Peaches. i love reading your blog, and i especially love the new look around her.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading!!
DeleteOk that's creepy.
ReplyDeleteAnd you never disappoint...always a good story told with so much humour...even when it's a story about your dead dog who at one time in their life was almost abducted by aliens.
;)
Thank you for the compliment!!!
DeleteThis is definitely, a WTF, moment. Maybe it foreshadowed that Mayan calendar ending thingy. Ellen
ReplyDeleteOh, lets hope not. I watched a special on that shit before bed last night. I dreamt of fireballs for 8 hours.
DeleteSo creepy!!!! I wouldn't have known WHAT to think of that.
ReplyDeleteCrazy, right??
DeleteYou like to hide all your deep thoughts, life observations and heartfelt brilliance under humor. I love that! And you do it so very well!
ReplyDeleteA lovely tribute to Peaches. She and the aliens surely are smiling down on you for this.
I love this comment. Thank you!!!
DeleteThat is insane! But makes for a great story! Peaches sounded like a sweet companion, and I am sorry that you are having to live without her.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you. She was such a blessing to me.
DeleteYes! Just like in Close Encounters with the mashed potatoes! I'm so sorry you lost Peaches. Dog lives last certain eras of our lives, with all the memories of those times encapsulated in their lifetime. I hope the memories are a comfort to you, like this (crazy) one.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully worded. Thanks.
DeleteClearly your dog was involved in intergalactic pilitics
ReplyDeleteClearly.
DeleteLost our beloved chocolate lab 7 weeks ago. She wasn't of the alien nature but her naughty four year old and possessed sister is from the "other" world. Sometimes I wish they'd beam her up but just for the day. Very cute and creepy tale!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about your lab. Terrible hurt. Thanks!!
DeleteAww sorry for the loss of your dog. I was crushed when we lost our dog. :(
ReplyDeletegood posting about Whole Lhasa Weirdness Going On
