She's been lying there for hours, tossing, turning, sighing, checking her telephone on the nightstand every 8-10 minutes, praying for sleep to engulf her.
She reaches for the phone again. The number on the clock causes her to curse through gritted teeth. She slams the phone to the table, turning onto her side, staring into the dark.
The bars all closed at 3. Where could he possibly be? Scenarios run through her mind, leaving her terrified and livid, as her heart pounds and her hands begin to shake.
Was he dead in a ditch? Or even worse, kissing the nape of another woman's neck, whiskey rolling off his lips?
Of course she didn't wish him dead, but her heart could one day, with time, recover from his death. She knew she'd never recover from another betrayal.
She pictures the mistress. She's probably gorgeous and young with shiny hair and flawless skin. Her stomach is firm, her legs are long, her laugh is contagious. She can probably sing beautifully. Probably does a mean Pat Benetar on karaoke. Probably dances like a whore in her size 0 blue jeans.
She sits up in the bed and throws the covers off of her heavy body. She heaves her legs over the side of the mattress for a moment, just sitting, resting, checking the phone again. No call, no text, nothing has changed but the number on the clock.
She slowly stands up and shuffles to the bathroom. Even if he was safe in their bed, she probably wouldn't be sleeping anyway. The aches, the pains, the urge to urinate every 24 minutes would be the cause of her insomnia.
The baby kicks as she rubs her stomach.
"Daddy will be home soon."
*For readers that know me personally, I know you're startled at an "unfunny" post, but this is merely fiction. I know how you small towners talk. It's 8 pm, the hubs is within three feet of me, and no one is pregnant.

very realistic details had me thinking it might not be fiction.
ReplyDeleteYep, this is why I added the "disclaimer."
Deletewow... you had me wondering.....
ReplyDeletenot really. I knew better. Even though I don't KNOW you, I still knew better.
Good story
Thanks, Robin. It sort of formed from a prompt and some other things, but I wanted to write something different this time.
DeleteI like the attention to visualization and the way you build your story. Nice job.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chatterbox!!
DeleteUmm, whoa Susannah.... Some of your readers don't need those palpitations first thing in the morning!
ReplyDeleteWG
Whoa, Guy. Sorry for the palps!
DeleteExcellent job!!!! You are a very versatile writer.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I was gonna post on Honey Boo Boo, but you pretty much hit that one out of the park!
DeleteWow, this is an awesome bit of fiction. You capture that middle of the night, can't sleep panic perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThank you:-)
DeleteWell done, Susannah... I was hooked from the start. Having read so many of your entries I assumed immediately it was fiction. Even if you've never had to endure this scene it's still relatable, and your writing propels us along. Very nice.
ReplyDeleteThanks for always reading and commenting. Means bunches!
DeleteNice details throughout - I love your ending line. Sounds hopeful yet spooky at the same time - revenge time?
ReplyDeleteThanks! Quite possibly...
DeleteAwww how sad for her!
ReplyDeleteloved it! so real and anxious and honest.
ReplyDeleteAh, thank you!!
DeleteYou made me ache for that woman and thank my lucky stars I'm not in her shoes. Well done!
ReplyDeleteMe, too. Thanks for reading!!
DeleteYour twist at the end grabbed me. It suddenly makes the situation far more complicated than I want it to be. Nicely done.
ReplyDeletePregnancy makes things complicated sometimes. Thanks for the comment!
DeleteOh man! So... what next? Is she paranoid or is he douchebag whoring his way through bars at 3a? There have been multiple betrayals? Of what sort? More, more, more! Really enjoyed this!
ReplyDeleteHaaaaa!!
DeleteI just sucked you right in then left you hanging. Maybe I will expand on this later. If I do, you'll be the first to know!
I liked the pacing here. I thought you did a nice job of setting the scene and painting a picture.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece of fiction. Of course, we all love your humor, but you've been mentioning that you're working on a book and now (more than even before) I can't wait to get my hands on the finished product. I was so with your protagonist on this one!! (Also, love the new look of your blog!!)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this comment. Thank you.
DeleteWell done! I love that being dead in a ditch would be better than being with another woman; even in this unfunny story, that detail made me smile.
ReplyDeleteHehehe, thanks.
DeleteThis made me so glad that I've never had to do that kind of worry. And I absolutely love that she'd prefer he be dead than face another betrayal. Well done!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the thought that she could get over his death but not another betrayal. I think it's a detail that makes the story feel really genuine. Good job!
ReplyDeleteI liked that part too..... Thanks much!!
DeleteWhat a nightmare situation, no wonder she couldn't sleep. I want to know what happens next!
ReplyDeleteLoved the disclaimer too ;)
Thank you! Hmmm....let me think about what happens next...
DeleteI was humming Carrie Underwood the entire time I read this. Great job of taking a small tense moment and describing it in a way that kept me riveted.
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks!
DeleteLoved the disclaimer! Well done piece with just the right amount of detail and suspense. Loved the part where she decides she could get over his death! Real and honest! Yay, you!
ReplyDeleteYay, you for the compliment!! Thank you!
DeleteI am so impressed how much detail you can fit into a piece of fiction! You made it all feel so real, and I admire that.
ReplyDeleteGreat story!
Thanks, Dawn!
DeleteOuch. I love the way you bring in the pregnancy at the end. I wondered before, mostly because I couldn't decide why she might be stuck at home while he was out anyway. And I like best that you didn't resolve it at the end. You didn't bring him home, kill him off, or have him text. You just let her deal with her emotions.
ReplyDeleteComment awesomeness. Thanks.
DeleteGreat post! It was fun to read something different from you. You have a wonderful range of talent. The pregnancy was a great touch, I agree!
ReplyDeleteShucks, this comment made me smile, too! TY!
DeleteCrap... that was quite a story! I love when writers I really enjoy do something different and make me still love them. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michelle!! I always love your comments.
DeleteSooo good! You know what I love about your writing? You can write anything! Keep up the great work... and congrats on those published articles! :)
ReplyDeleteShucks, this made me smile. Thanks!!
DeleteSo well written! I loved it. I think your disclaimer was one of the best parts - you still got your funny in there even though this was a very serious piece of fiction! :)
ReplyDeleteI had to add that sucker. People like to talk...Thanks!
DeleteI loved this change in style from you! Really compellingly told story.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!!!
