I hate when people say "I gotta do me" or "you've gotta do you", but I just went all urban on you and said it anyway.
Why?
Because I gotta do me.
Did you know that November is National Novel Writing Month? Of course you did. This means that I will be totally focused on finishing my novel this month. I can't get my mind off track and blog about Seabiscuit taking a dump or Olivia Newton-John's visit. (PS- that trick is finally rolling into town tonight. The local DJ's are all in a tizzy.)
Yeah, I just went all urban again and said trick.
The entire fam- hubs, kids, sister and fam, bro and fam, parentals, pet Chupacabra and I- are also spending the holidays on the white sandy beaches of Destin, Florida, USA. I'm going to be more worried about squeezing my fat dressing-filled ass in a tankini than I am about blogging.
However, I'm going to be sure to take the laptop with me on the vacay because November is National Novel Writing Month, and I've got to get this book done. A deadline is just what I need to motivate me to finish.
Oh, it seems I've already plugged that up there.
And last but certainly not least, I'm pissed at the Interwebs right now, anyway, so we need a break from one another. And I'm going to tell you why.
***
I very rarely use the "F" word while writing. I usually opt for a cleaner version of this bomb. You know, out of respect for the elders like Great Aunt Ida who read my blog.
"What the F is she doing?"
"What the Eff are you doing?"
"What the F Word am I doing?"
Well, prepare yourself, my friends. If you can't handle the F word for the remainder of this post, then click the fucking X in the top right corner.
Classy writing, isn't it?
Here's what's got me dropping the fucking F bomb.
I recently entered a short story contest, and I got some feedback today.
The story that I submitted is the tale of a newly divorced chick and her hellacious experience at the Winn Dixie. Really, that is the gist of the entire thing. I didn't say that it was a great literary work. I didn't say that this story would change the lives of millions. No, I just said I simply submitted a short story about a woman's horomonal rampage in the grocery store.
This story had nothing to do with politics. And please keep in mind that I rarely voice my political opinion online. Rarely. Very rarely. Really rarely. Extremely very really rarely. I've retweeted some things on Twitter that hint at whether I'm Pro-Elephant or Pro-Donkey, but I've never ever ever just come out and bashed the other political party. Never. Ever.
However, my critique-er must have researched my Tweets and discovered who I follow on Twitter and done hell of some digging to find out my political party affiliation. I don't know why she'd want to waste her time doing this, but what the fuck ever.
Here is some feedback that I received on my non-political short story:
"This was a witty story but if I have to be honest, I can't vote for an entry that was written by someone that is an idiot when it comes to politics."
Ouch.
That un-biased comment is bubbling forth with open-mindedness and tolerance, isn't it?
When the fuck did my political preference influence my writing? When did this story produce words that tear down this country? The girl merely lost her shit in Winn Dixie. I didn't say Obama was the reason she lost her shit in Winn Dixie. I said her husband cheating on her and the empty space on the Honeybun shelf is the reason she lost her shit in Winn Dixie.
I'll just come out and admit it. I'm a Republican, by God. I'm a Republican, and I'm a damn good and decent person.
I believe life starts at conception. I believe that big government is dangerous. I believe in conservative values and morals (I mean, besides dropping the F bomb 23 times in a blog post). And guess what else? I don't totally hate you if you don't believe in these things. I'm not a hate monger. And I don't use words to tear down the country that my forefathers and grandfathers helped to build.
I'm a hell of a lot more tolerant than the Democrat that left me feedback on a fucking non-political short story.
Eddie Vedder is my favorite voice in the world, and he walked around in a George Bush mask during the entire Nashville, TN Pearl Jam concert in 2003. I paid 127 bucks to watch my favorite voice bash my favorite President for two hours, but guess what? I still dig Eddie Vedder.
A friend of mine recently sat me down and had a "good talking to" with me about Obamacare. I listened with an open mind. And I still disagreed with her. And then we had a beer and agreed to never discuss politics again.
My point is this, if you think that my writing blows biscuits just because I'm voting for Mitt Romney this year, then you have a problem. Not me. I've never disliked a person merely because they view things differently than I do.
As a Republican, I'm the minority. If I hated every Democrat that I came in contact with, then I'd be doing a lot of damn hating.
If I can be tolerant of other people's views, then why can't people be tolerant of mine? Not voting for my short story simply because I'm a Republican is un-fucking-constitutional.
Now I think I'll go lose my shit in Winn Dixie. (**drops mic and exits stage left**)
I hope everyone, Republican or Democrat, has a wonderful November. May your gravy flow forth freely, and may only a small percentage of giblets get caught in your molars.
(**drops mic and exits stage right**)
I could never ever think your writing blows and this post had me laughing all the way through! Oh and please post your short story because I really want to read your Winn Dixie story. It sounds awesome, despite the inappropriate, douchenozzely critique you received. Enjoy your blog hiatus/novel writing. You will be missed!
ReplyDeleteHave a great vaca enjoy and I like you regardless of your political views (shhh I am not an Obama fan either). Eddie ohhlala yes his voice melts me like butter. Oh & that picture with the banjo.....A W E S O M E!!! see ya in December :))
ReplyDeleteHard to believe someone would use politics to critique your writing. This person shouldn't be critiquing anything.
ReplyDeleteFirst, enjoy your vacation in Destin - it was one of our favorite spots to travel to when we lived in Louisiana. =)
ReplyDeleteSecond, I think it sucks...just a bit...that I just started following you all of four days ago and you're leaving me already...but fine, be that way LOL
Third, why am I using numbers? This political season has been horrible. It's the worst I've seen and the first time I've been hesitant to say I'm a Republican. I'm so sorry you had that comment posted on your short story.
I'll be waiting on your return - have fun!!!
I know you are a republican..and I still love your blog posts. :) I look for your twitter posts to get your latests posts. Don't let the haters get you down. Enjoy your vacation...I'll be looking for you on twitter.
ReplyDeleteHeya!
ReplyDeleteSo, I'll preface this by saying that I think you're swell. I think you're funny, and smart, and interesting. So, what I'm about to say is not an indictment, or an accusation, or anything of the like. Neither is it an attempt to sway you to my views - you're smart and interesting enough to make up your own mind.
Rather, it's a sincere attempt to answer a question you asked, so, here it goes!
You asked: "If I can be tolerant of other people's views, then why can't people be tolerant of mine?"
My issues are not with your ability to tolerate the views of others, rather, they are with your party of choice's need to legislate those views onto others.
So, as a pro-choice, athiest, foul-mouthed liberal, I'll defend to the effind death yoru right to believe life begins at conception, and to choose what to do about it.
But your party will not do the same for me.
As a straight, monogamous white dude, I'll defend to the death your right to sleep with/marry/live with/raise a family with whomever you choose, so long as they are able to consent.
But your party will not do the same for people who are not just like me.
As a father, and a damn good one, to the coolest little girl on the planet, I believe that you have the right to expect to earn equal pay for equal work, and to have access to reproductive healthcare - whether or not you choose to take advantage of it.
But your party will not do the same for my daughter.
So, I respect - and will loudly and vociferously defend your right to hold - your views. But I can not respoect your party, which is trying to prevent so many people from living out the important, intensely personal aspects of theirs, in which government has no business.
Anyway, let's go have a drink and not talk about politics again! :)
Have a wonderful vacay and best of luck finishing your novel. What an asshat that person was to leave such a comment. I've been telling every one I'm a Libertarian this year just to see their reaction. It's especially awesome when the political pollsters hang up on you!!!
ReplyDeleteI've known for a long time that you're a Republican. I saw a thread on Twitter many months ago. I'm a Liberal, but it never occurred to me to feel any different about you or your writing. To critique a piece of fiction from the inside of your politics is absurd. Recently I unfollowed someone on Twitter who was actually a Liberal - but all the nasty nonsense she was putting out there was just too much. All this vitriol and name calling is beyond frustrating. My sister is a die-hard conservative, and I love her. I can't imagine my world without her. I haven't read your story yet, but I'm heading over there right now. Good luck with your novel. You're going places with your writing - of that I have no doubt. No, I don't have a crystal ball, just a gut feeling.
ReplyDeleteOH EM GEE and all this time, I actually *liked* you, I liked your writing, I thought you were FUNNY! Wiping away a tear I now come to find out ALL this time you were really just a Republican. A REPUBLICAN! Stomping my foot, I demand to know WHY? How could you DO this to me?! Sniffling, I stammer, I, I, I thought we were friends.
ReplyDeleteMaking a sad face, I tell you, I could never stay mad at you, I will miss reading your blog and almost peeing myself from laughing so hard. Good luck with NaNo and I look forward to reading the results!
Also, I really liked the short, thought it was typical, hilarious Z goods. F that F-ing F word and his or her criti-effing-cism.
ReplyDeleteI just simply can't even begin to understand how and why this person could be so cruel, disrespectful and absolutely filled with disdain. This critic is not worth your energy, your anger, or your voice. Try (hard) to let it go and rise above that low bottom dweller. You are so much better than that. I almost wish you didn't even glorify it with a response. People like that need no attention...they don't deserve it. SO sorry you were attacked. Not. Right. Period. Keep using your words as gifts...that is what they are! You are worthy!!! The critic is not worthy of anything... Assholes are everywhere. Stay focused on the good guys as best you can! :)
ReplyDeleteWHAT!?! So us Independents don't get to have a wonderful November!?! How DARE YOU! I guess I'll just have to be free to have whatever November I want, and I want an indifferent November because I'm too cynical to like either party. [drops mic, exits stage front]
ReplyDelete[Also, no malice intended, I was being sarcastic in case you couldn't tell.]
I'll be (R)ocking the vote with you, and I also agree that the commenter is an asshat for trying to mix politics & pleasure. I'll be anxiously awaiting your return!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break, you will be missed!!!!
ReplyDeleteI commend you-GOOD FOR YOU! For taking a stand and stating your views and I'm with you - I am SO VERY SICK TO DEATH of it all. I am a Republican as well, and have managed to avoid political talk online because I find that it accomplishes nothing. So again, good for you!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to do the NaNo but am currently buried alive in work and the stress of that and work would have sent me screaming for the nearest psych ward. So maybe I'll do the camp this summer - or be in a better place next November. So good luck on your novel! Go, go, go!! At least I can cheer you on and participate that way!
I have ALWAYS wanted to celebrate a holiday at the beach - but my more 'traditionalist' fam cannot wrap their heads around it so maybe someday...
Love and hugs and look forward to your return!
I love you more. Have a good break. :) Ellen
ReplyDeleteThis makes me really angry. I'm so sorry that someone felt it appropriate to judge your writing talent based on politics. The US is becoming so polarized that it's mroe and more difficult for people to have civil political disagreements, and I suppose there's blame to go around on both sides. I actually just wrote about that very thing - American ideological tribalism - on my latest blog post, which occurred to me watching the election from Kenya, a place where politics is almost completely tribal.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm sorry. Even as a flaming liberal, I love you, your writing, your wit, your sense of humor, your raw emotions. And I can only expect to love this novel you're writing. Have a terrific and productive break!
I recently made it a point to not comment on political views, so I will refrain from voicing any opinion on this well written, well thought out, extremely sensible, intellegent, rant against some insensitive, narrow minded intolerant cretin!
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I just will not do it.
